English Wine
England has emerged as one of the world’s most exciting cool-climate wine regions, with rapid growth in both vineyard plantings and international recognition. The country’s relatively cool climate, chalk and limestone soils, and long growing season are particularly well suited to the production of high-quality sparkling wines.
Traditional-method sparkling wine is the cornerstone of the English industry, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier the principal varieties. Still wines, particularly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are also gaining prominence. Vineyards are concentrated mainly in southern England, especially Kent, Sussex and Hampshire. With a strong focus on quality, innovation and sustainable viticulture, English wine continues to develop rapidly and has established a distinctive presence on the international stage.
