Bairrada

Bairrada is a distinctive wine region in central Portugal, situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the foothills of the Serra do Buçaco. Its cool, maritime climate, abundant rainfall and clay-limestone soils create favourable conditions for producing wines with freshness, structure and pronounced regional character.

Baga is the region’s signature red grape, producing deeply coloured, tannic wines with excellent ageing potential, while international varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Merlot are also important. Bairrada is equally known for its traditional-method sparkling wines and increasingly acclaimed whites, particularly those made from Bical, Cercial and Maria Gomes. The region combines a strong winemaking heritage with modern techniques and growing interest in sustainable viticulture, helping to reinforce Bairrada’s reputation for distinctive, high-quality wines.
