Douro Valley

The Douro Valley is one of Portugal’s most historic and spectacular wine regions, following the Douro River through steep, rugged hills in the country’s north-east. Its hot, dry summers, harsh terrain and schist-rich soils create challenging conditions that produce grapes with remarkable concentration, character and intensity.

The region is world-renowned for Port, Portugal’s iconic fortified wine, but it also produces increasingly acclaimed dry red and white wines. Traditional varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca are central to its red wines. The Douro’s historic terraced vineyards, many planted on steep slopes, are complemented by modern winemaking and growing investment in sustainable vineyard management, helping the region maintain its international reputation for distinctive, high-quality wines.
